Five new suspects arrested over Louvre crown jewellery heist

Five new suspects have been arrested for their involvement in the brazen robbery of 88 million worth of French crown jewellery at the Louvre museum in Paris, the Paris prosecutor said on Thursday. The theft shocked the world as it took place in front of stunned visitors in broad daylight, targeting one of the museums most valuable collections.

Frenchpolice have arrested five new people, including a main suspect, over this monthsdaring jewellery theftfrom theLouvremuseum, the Paris prosecutor said on Thursday.

We had him in our sights, Laure Beccuau said of the main suspect, adding that none of the loot has been found.

The new arrests follow thedetention over the weekend of two mensuspected of breaking into the museum through an upstairs window and stealing the precious pieces. The prosecutor said the pair hadpartially admitted their involvementin the heist under interrogation.

The five new suspects were detained late Wednesday night in Paris and the Paris region, Beccuau said. She did not release their identities or other details.

The robbery exposed security lapses at the worlds most-visited museum and was seen by many as a cause for national humiliation.

Beccuau has previously said she does not rule out the possibility of the involvement of a larger criminal group, including a person who may have ordered the theft and been the mastermind behind it.
