ChineseToday | Neonatal nurses lift up hope for newborns in SW China's Yunnan

(260512) -- KUNMING, May 12, 2026 (Xinhua) -- Nurse Yang Limei takes care of a neonatal patient at the neonatology department of the First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province in Kunming, southwest China's Yunnan Province, May 10, 2026. As the neonatal nurses in the First People's Hospital of Yunnan Province, Yang Limei and her colleagues' routine work is to take care of the newborns suffering with critical illness like premature birth, asphyxia, congenital diseases or severe infections.

Though new life usually brings people with joy, working with these newborns here means extremely meticulous service to Yang and her colleagues. They need to feed these babies every three hours, eight times a day, and conduct 24-hour non-stop monitoring of vital signs.

There are over 60 nurses like Yang in the neonatology department of the hospital. During these years, more than 3,000 newborns have been recovered each year under their care. They are the ones who lift up hope at the beginning of life. (Xinhua/Peng Yikai)
