TRIPOLI, April 16 (Xinhua) -- Libya's Ministry of Marine Resources, under the internationally recognized Government of National Unity, on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Tripoli to promote the blue economy, according to a UNDP statement.

The two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in developing a national blue economy strategy, building institutional capacity, advancing the aquaculture sector, and protecting marine ecosystems, the statement said.

"The blue economy offers a pathway to diversify the economy while protecting marine ecosystems and creating new opportunities for communities along the coast," UNDP Resident Representative in Libya Sophie Kemkhadze said.

Libya has about 1,900 km of Mediterranean coastline, offering significant potential in fishing, tourism, and maritime services. Yet weak infrastructure, a lack of planning, and underinvestment have left this strategic asset largely underutilized.
