YAOUNDE, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The 31st edition of the Mount Cameroon Race took place on Saturday in the country's southwest region.
Hamadou Bi Ibrahim won the men's race while Destiny Grace Wirba triumphed in the women's.
"I am very pleased and proud to win this race. It is a difficult race, especially when climbing the mountain. It was much easier when I was descending," Ibrahim told Xinhua after crossing the finish line.
Cameroon's Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, said it was a source of pride for the Central African country to host the international event.
The race opened under the theme "Give peace a chance", drawing 600 athletes from 14 countries and regions.
The race, dubbed the Race of Hope, features a particularly difficult terrain, with athletes going up and down the mountain, which is about 4,100 meters above sea level.
