The humanitarian crisis caused by drought, which had been predicted for some time, is worsening in Somalia amid the indifference of the international community.

Last week, the Somali government declared a national emergency due to drought:

Over 4.5 million people are at risk of starvation, with nearly two million children malnourished.

The lack of rain and extreme heat have devastated the southern and central regions. The crisis is worsening with crop failures and livestock deaths.

Meanwhile, humanitarian agencies say the scale of need is overwhelming and resources are insufficient, as the $1.4 billion humanitarian response plan for Somalia is only 22% funded.
